# Trial and licence

Understand the trial, activate a purchase and recover access.

## Try the app first

Start with a **14-day free trial** with no credit card required, then buy at the **US$49 launch price. One-time purchase.** **No subscription**. There is no automatic charge at the end of the trial. Check **Settings → Licence** for the state of your Mac.

After the trial ends, you need a licence to start new recordings or import files. Existing recordings remain available to read, play and export.

## Purchase and activate

1. Open **Settings → Licence** and choose **Buy TapScribe…**.
2. Complete the purchase in Polar's hosted checkout in your browser.
3. Retrieve your licence key from the purchase confirmation or customer portal.
4. Return to **Settings → Licence**, paste the key and choose **Activate Licence**.
5. Confirm that the app shows licensed access on this Mac.

Activation needs an internet connection. Do not post the key publicly or include it in screenshots. A successful purchase and an activated Mac are separate steps; if either fails, keep your receipt and [contact support](/support/).

## Use a second Mac or replace one

One licence covers one person on up to two of their own active Macs. Separate people need separate licences.

Deactivate an old Mac before using its slot on a replacement. Use the licence-management action in Settings to open Polar's customer portal if the old Mac is unavailable. Remove only the old activation you intend to replace, then activate the new Mac with your key. Reinstalling should not be used as a way to create another trial or bypass an activation limit.

## Recover a lost key

Use the customer portal opened from Licence settings and the email associated with the purchase. If you cannot access that email or cannot find the order, contact support with the purchase email and order reference. Do not send meeting audio or transcripts.

If the app reports an interrupted activation, follow its portal-reconciliation instructions before trying again. Repeated activation attempts can make the state harder to understand.

## Offline use and licence checks

An activated Mac has a 30-day offline allowance measured from its last successful licence validation. Failed checks do not restart that allowance. A new or replacement Mac must connect to activate.

If access needs a check, reconnect and use the licence-check action shown in Settings. After the allowance expires, you need a successful licence check before starting new recordings or importing files. Existing recordings remain accessible. Internet access is required for activation and periodic licence validation through Polar.

## 30-day money-back guarantee

If TapScribe is not right for you, request a full refund within **30 days of purchase**. You do not need to prove a software defect, and feedback is optional. The guarantee starts on your purchase date and is separate from the 14-day free trial. See [How to request a refund](/refunds/) for the contact route and purchase details to include.

## Included updates

Your purchase includes version 1.0 and all 1.x updates. All updates released within 12 months of purchase are also included. Your version 1.0 and all 1.x updates remain included, even beyond 12 months. This applies to existing and new purchases, measured from each original purchase date. Major upgrades released after your first 12 months may be sold separately and are optional. You can keep using the version covered by your licence, subject to its system requirements and periodic licence checks. Read [Terms](/terms/) for the licence scope.
